One is a suite that happens to sync files, the other a sync engine that happens to have a web interface. On a storage VPS with a few gigabytes of memory, that difference decides more than any feature list.

**Quick answer — Nextcloud or Seafile on a small storage VPS?**

For Nextcloud or Seafile on a small storage VPS, choose Seafile for lean file sync with client-side encrypted libraries, and Nextcloud when you also want calendars, contacts, office documents and apps. Seafile asks for 2 GB of RAM and 2 cores; Nextcloud recommends 512 MB per PHP process. At **Coffervale**, Shale gives 2 TB and 4 GB RAM for $3.34 a month on 12 months (2 November 2026).

## How do Nextcloud and Seafile compare on a storage VPS?

| Point | Nextcloud (35) | Seafile Community Edition |
| --- | --- | --- |
| What it is | A suite: files plus calendars, contacts, office and apps | File sync and share, with document collaboration |
| Stated hardware need | 128 MB minimum and 512 MB recommended per PHP process | 2 GB of RAM; 2 cores above 2 GHz recommended |
| Database | MariaDB, MySQL or PostgreSQL; SQLite for tests only | MySQL, with Redis as cache (Docker setup) |
| How it is installed | PHP application behind Apache or nginx | Docker images; binary install documented for Ubuntu 24.04 and 22.04, Debian 12 and 11 |
| How files sit on disk | As ordinary files in the data directory, unless server-side encryption is on | As content-defined blocks of about 8 MB on average, plus commit and file-system objects |
| Encryption against the server | End-to-end encryption app for chosen folders; the server-side module keeps keys on the server | Encrypted libraries, AES-256 on the desktop client; names and folder structure stay readable |

From the Nextcloud 35 administration manual and the Seafile admin manual, both read on 2 November 2026.

## How much RAM do Nextcloud and Seafile need on a small VPS?

**Seafile states a floor of 2 GB for its Community Edition; Nextcloud states no total and sizes memory per PHP process.** Nextcloud's server tuning chapter says a typical PHP worker uses 50 to 100 MB and that the default pool runs at most five at once, so five workers at 100 MB take about 500 MB, and a household-sized Nextcloud fits in 2 GB beside its database. Seafile's manual gives 2 GB and 2 cores for the Community Edition without splitting that figure by component.

According to Coffervale's survey of 2 November 2026, 9 of the 14 storage VPS plans of about 1 TB listed by hosts that take crypto without an ID document came with 2 GB of RAM or less, and 4 of those with just 1 GB, half of what Seafile asks for. On a storage VPS, memory runs out long before the disk does. At Coffervale, Silt has 2 GB RAM, Clay 3 GB RAM and Shale 4 GB RAM; the worker arithmetic for each plan is in [What is the best VPS for Nextcloud with 1 TB or more of storage?](https://coffervale.com/nextcloud-vps/ "Nextcloud sizing on a storage VPS").

## Which one runs better on hard disks?

**Both run well on hard disks once the database and caches stay small and hot; neither turns an HDD into an SSD.** Every plan stores your data on hard disks (HDD) chosen for capacity, not speed: they suit backups, archives and file sync, not databases or heavy random reads and writes. We publish no speed or IOPS figure we cannot back; [Is an HDD storage VPS fast enough for backups and Nextcloud?](https://coffervale.com/hdd-vs-ssd-vps/ "HDD against SSD on a storage VPS") goes through the details. Nextcloud needs APCu and Redis configured by hand, as its manual describes; Seafile's Docker setup ships Redis as its cache. The structural difference is how files are stored. Seafile cuts each file into variable-length blocks with content-defined chunking, which its manual says lets it deduplicate data between versions of a file. Nextcloud keeps each file whole on disk, so other tools on the VPS, such as rsync or a backup client, can read the data directory directly.

## Which one keeps my files private from the server?

**Seafile's encrypted libraries, used through the desktop client, keep file contents unreadable to the server; Nextcloud needs its end-to-end encryption app for the same.** Seafile's manual spells out the limits. Encryption happens on the client only when you sync with the desktop app. Opening an encrypted library in the browser sends the password to the server, which then decrypts the file key, and file metadata such as the full list of file and folder names is not encrypted. The manual also states that an encrypted library does not ensure file integrity.

Nextcloud's server-side encryption module is a different thing: its keys live on the server, and its documentation says it does not protect against a compromised server or a malicious administrator. For data the VPS must never read at all, client-side tools beat both, as in [How do I run Syncthing on a VPS as an always-on node?](https://coffervale.com/syncthing-on-a-vps/ "Syncthing in untrusted, encrypted mode"). Whoever runs a hypervisor can technically read an unencrypted virtual disk, at any VPS host. We do not open your files, and data you encrypt before it leaves your machine takes the question off the table.

## Which should I choose?

**Choose by what you need besides files: nothing, then Seafile; calendars, contacts and shared documents, then Nextcloud.** The rest follows from memory and from how you want to reach the data.

| Your situation | Pick | Why |
| --- | --- | --- |
| File sync for a few people on 2 GB of RAM | Seafile CE | Its stated floor is 2 GB, and it does one job |
| Calendars, contacts, shared office files | Nextcloud | A suite rather than a sync engine |
| Files the server must not read | Seafile encrypted libraries via the desktop client | Encrypted before upload; names stay visible |
| Other tools must read the files on disk | Nextcloud | Files stay whole in the data directory |
| Sync between your own devices only, no web interface | Syncthing | No database, no PHP, encrypted node possible |
| Debian 13 without Docker | Nextcloud | Seafile's binary install lists Debian 12 and 11 only |

## Does Nextcloud or Seafile replace a backup?

**No: both sync deletions and both keep their only copy on the VPS unless you add another.** We take no backup of your server and keep no copy of your data anywhere else, so what sits on a Coffervale storage VPS should be one of your copies, never the only one. Back up the database and the data folder together, because Nextcloud's file list and Seafile's library metadata live in the database, and Seafile's blocks are useless without it. The setup is in [How do I use a VPS for off-site backups?](https://coffervale.com/backup-vps/ "Off-site backups to a second location"), and plan sizes are on [How much does a storage VPS cost per month?](https://coffervale.com/pricing/ "Coffervale storage VPS prices").

## Questions about Nextcloud and Seafile on a VPS

### Is Seafile lighter than Nextcloud?

On paper, Seafile CE states 2 GB of RAM, while Nextcloud states its needs per PHP process. With the default five PHP workers at the 50 to 100 MB the Nextcloud manual calls typical, a few users fit in 2 GB on either.

### Can I install Seafile on Debian 13?

Use the Docker images: the Seafile manual lists its binary packages for Ubuntu 24.04 and 22.04 and Debian 12 and 11 only. Alternatively pick Debian 12 or Ubuntu 24.04 when you order. Debian 13, Debian 12, Ubuntu 24.04 LTS, AlmaLinux 10, Rocky Linux 10.

### Can I move from Seafile to Nextcloud later?

Yes, but not by copying Seafile's data folder, since it holds blocks rather than your files. Sync the libraries to a computer with the Seafile client, then add the folders to Nextcloud from there.

### Which one should a family of four use on 2 TB?

Nextcloud, if anyone wants shared calendars, contacts or an easy phone photo upload; Seafile, if all you need is folders that stay in sync. Both fit on Shale with 4 GB RAM.

### Does Seafile encrypt file names in encrypted libraries?

No. Its manual says file metadata, including the full list of file and folder names, is not encrypted. Only the file contents are.
