Which storage VPS gives the most terabytes for the money?

A storage VPS trades processor and SSD speed for raw capacity, and that changes the price per terabyte by a factor of about fifty. Here is how 2 to 8 TB compares, here and at the hosts we surveyed.

Quick answer

Which VPS gives the most storage for the money?

A storage VPS gives the most terabytes for the money: on 2 November 2026, the median one from no-KYC crypto hosts cost $4.00 per TB a month, against $223.44 for a general-purpose VPS. Coffervale sells 2, 4 and 8 TB at $1.67, $1.88 and $2.09 per TB a month on 12 months, paid in crypto without ID.

Why is a storage VPS so much cheaper per terabyte?

Because it is built on large hard disks instead of NVMe, with a small processor on top. A general-purpose VPS sells speed: fast SSDs, more cores per gigabyte of disk. A storage VPS sells capacity: high-density HDD arrays where a terabyte costs a fraction of an SSD terabyte, and just enough vCPU and RAM to move data in and out.

The survey shows the gap. According to Coffervale's survey of 2 November 2026, which read 70 providers, the hosts that take crypto and ask for no ID document at signup listed 99 in-stock storage VPS plans of 500 GB or more, billed monthly, with a median of $4.00 per TB. Their 48 general-purpose plans with 300 GB or more had a median of $223.44 per TB: about 56 times as much. If what you need is room for data, buying it as a regular VPS is the expensive route, as storage VPS or regular VPS: which one do I need? sets out.

How do the 2, 4 and 8 TB plans compare?

Shale, Granite and Bedrock double in size at each step, and so do their processor and memory, more or less. The price per terabyte stays between $1.67 and $2.09 a month on the 12-month term.

What do other no-KYC hosts charge for 2 to 8 TB?

On 2 November 2026, the three least expensive in-stock offers at each size came from the same three hosts. Each row is the host's least expensive plan with at least that much disk, in Europe, billed monthly, as listed on its own page that day.

Four sellers that take crypto without an ID document showed every storage plan out of stock on the same day: BuyVM, Senko Digital, AlphaVPS, VPSDime. A low price on a sold-out page does not store anything, which is why the comparison counts only plans that could be ordered; every seller, in stock or not, is in what is the least expensive storage VPS per TB right now?.

When is a dedicated storage server the better fit?

Past 8 TB, or when you need disks that no one else touches. Bedrock, at 8 TB, is the largest storage VPS we sell. Past that size a dedicated storage server, a whole machine full of disks, is the better fit, and we say so plainly rather than stretch a VPS.

A storage VPS shares a disk array and its throughput with other customers, which is what makes it affordable. A dedicated storage server gives you the whole machine: every drive, the full bandwidth of the array, and the choice of your own RAID or ZFS layout. It also costs more at small sizes. As a rough guide, below about 10 TB a storage VPS is usually the economical choice; above it, compare the price of a whole machine.

How should you lay out several terabytes?

Treat a big storage VPS as one copy among several, and encrypt what you put on it.

  • Split the disk by purpose: one area or ZFS dataset per backup source, so a mistake in one does not spill into the others (how do I mount and format the storage disk on a Linux VPS?).
  • KVM gives your server its own kernel, so you can put LUKS on the data disk or run ZFS with native encryption, and the keys never leave you. For backups, encrypt on your own machine before upload (Borg, restic and Kopia all do it), so the server only ever holds ciphertext.
  • Keep the system disk unencrypted and the data disk under LUKS: after a reboot, log in over SSH and unlock the data disk with your passphrase.
  • One storage VPS is one copy in one place. The 3-2-1 rule asks for three copies, on two kinds of media, with one of them off-site: a storage VPS fits as that off-site copy, next to two you keep yourself. Two servers in two of our cities give you two off-site copies in different countries; the routine is in how do I use a VPS for off-site backups?.
  • Disk redundancy keeps a server running through a failed drive; it does not undo a deletion, ransomware or a lost account, so it is not a backup.

Questions about VPS with a lot of storage

What is the price per TB of a storage VPS in 2026?

On 2 November 2026, the median in-stock storage VPS from no-KYC crypto hosts cost $4.00 per TB a month, across 99 plans. Coffervale charges $1.67 to $2.09 per TB a month for 2 to 8 TB on the 12-month term.

Is HDD storage fast enough for a large VPS?

For backups, file sync and archives, yes: those jobs read and write in long runs, which hard disks handle well. For databases or many small random writes, no. Every plan stores your data on hard disks (HDD) chosen for capacity, not speed: they suit backups, archives and file sync, not databases or heavy random reads and writes. We publish no speed or IOPS figure we cannot back.

Can I start at 2 TB and grow to 8 TB later?

To grow, order a larger plan and copy your data across with rsync or zfs send; resizing a running server in place is not offered at launch. Moving 2 TB between two servers in the same city usually takes hours, not days, on a 1 Gbit/s port.

How much traffic comes with 8 TB?

Each server has one IPv4 address and an IPv6 /64 on a 1 Gbit/s port, with a monthly traffic quota of 2 TB plus 2 TB per TB stored: 3 TB for Silt, 4 TB for Clay, 6 TB for Shale, 10 TB for Granite, 18 TB for Bedrock. Past the quota the port runs at 100 Mbit/s until the next period begins; nothing extra is billed.

Is a large storage VPS a backup by itself?

No. One storage VPS is one copy in one place. The 3-2-1 rule asks for three copies, on two kinds of media, with one of them off-site: a storage VPS fits as that off-site copy, next to two you keep yourself. We take no backup of your server and keep no copy of your data anywhere else, so what sits on a Coffervale storage VPS should be one of your copies, never the only one.
